Raimundus Lullus); die eindeutige, umkehrbare
Zuordnung von Gedanken, Begriffen und
Zeichen (»characteres«) sollte formale Operationen ermöglichen, die das Denken zum
Kalkül machen. Die Zurückführbarkeit zusammengesetzter Zeichen und Begriffe auf einfache Zeichen nach bestimmten Kombinationsregeln hatte das Ziel, die
Verständlichkeit aller sprachlicher Aussagen zu
sichern und Denkfehler zu verhindern. Die Characteristica universalis wurde im Kalkül der neuzeitlichen mathematischen Logik zum Teil verwirklicht.
